Stacking away great ideas on the best decorating theme or decorating techniques doesn’t make you ‘decorating ready’ when you decide to actually do it. I’m not sure how it happens, but one day, you hear a tiny voice whisper that you need to do something with your place. The whisper becomes louder.
You don’t have the energy, time or money to do everything you really want to but you notice than everything looks tired and you feel tired at looking at it. Once the seed is planted you are a gonner.
Whether you’re putting together an entire decorating scheme from scratch or just looking for ways to give your place a little decorating Botox bling it’s good to take a holistic approach.
Even if you never do a thing, change your mind or start, you have a better idea of what you want, what you’ve got and where you stand. You can tweak, create and streamline as you go along.
A little word on ‘interior decorating styles’. Picking one complete home decorating style is all right but most of them go out of style as quickly as they came. They come and go – apart from retro and antiques which just live on regardless like Alice Cooper! What you want is to nail your own personal style and be true to that.
My personal taste is a comfortable and easy. I like to mix up old and new, antiques and vintage and can do that fairly easily as long as large areas like walls and sofas are kept to hues of pale shades of white.
That way I can glam it, cool it or keep it classic depending on my mood and the occasion. You can do what ever you want… It’s all up to you as long as you can remember this – layers.
Really stylish home decorating takes into account lots of elements – fabrics, papers, paints, flooring, furniture and lighting. Think of a room having lots of layers.
Each one plays a part in the overall effect, from the large elements like sofas and windows to the smallest candle or pillow. The details are vital but not in isolation.
Consider how each item works. This will help you build a look that is visually stunning and absolutely practical. Like any great outfit – it’s not just about the dress… (hair and makeup, thanks!) Don’t rush this part – you won’t get the effect you want if you do. Rushing to pick colours, fabrics or tiles misses a range of important decisions needed before these steps. That’s if you want your decorating to sing.
So let’s get practical before you get down and decorating or else you early decisions might just frustrate you.
Never sacrifice comfort and functionality for pure bling. Like all rushed love affairs – it won’t last beyond the weekend. To get real decorating high, work out your restrictions first because, when it works, every time you walk through the door you will feel it. Working out your limitations helps you understand your space. Your priorities become clearer.
Limitations can be anything from not enough sunlight, small rooms, over sized windows, or layout. Only you can work out what these challenges are but, once you know, you can remedy, manage them or change them. With your priorities listed you can move on to Rule Two.
Create the ‘all challenging’ mood – even if just on paper to begin with. This can be as complicated, intricate, expensive or minimalist as you life and tastes allow. This will add bones to your plan.
