By: Advaita Raut |

When you’re house proud, you’ll likely have a gleaming bathroom, gorgeous fluffy towels and pretty accessories. But how do you get the complete spa experience and create the smell of a spa in your own bathroom?

You’ll be pleased to know you don’t need to use any toxic chemicals. There are many natural ways you can have your bathroom smelling fresh and expensive all year round. So you can lie back and relax in a bubble bath in your own sweet-smelling bathroom sanctuary.

Something in the Air

An air purifier is perfect for helping to eliminate bacteria, germs, odors, and mold. Mold grows through moisture, oxygen, and damp and dimly-lit areas, making your bathroom a potential breeding ground.

If you don’t have an air vent or window then an air purifier might be a good investment to keep your bathroom mold-free and dry.

Reed Diffuser

Reed diffusers are pieces of reed placed in an essential oil or scent that allow aroma to continuously diffuse into the air throughout your bathroom. This little unit can look stylish on a bathroom shelf.

Compared to scented candles, reed diffusers produce fragrances that usually last longer, up to around 8 weeks, and you won’t have the worry of an open flame. In a range of as many gorgeous smells as you can imagine, there are plenty to choose from.

Essential Oil Diffuser

Have you tried an oil diffuser? This can have some great health benefits, such as neutralizing airborne pathogens, supporting your respiratory system. It can also help emotionally by quieting and sedating the nervous system, and giving an overall calm feeling.

Vibrations from the diffuser mix the essential oils with water vapor which is dispersed as a very fine mist into the air. Essential oils such as citrus lemon, grapefruit and orange, and peppermint can help with concentration.

Good Enough to Eat

Not only can slices of orange, lemon and lime provide a wonderful scent to your bathroom and look so zingy and bright, if you put them in the bath, you will get some glorious natural health benefits.

The citric acid and vitamin C in the citrus peel help to revive skin, shrink your pores, promote healthy circulation and reduce sensitivity to the cold. A good choice in the chilly months!

An Apple a Day

Now, you may not have thought of this before, but slicing an apple in half and leaving it in your bathroom can spread a lovely appley scent throughout the room.

Not only does the apple smell wonderful but it will draw bad smells into the fruit. Just don’t leave it out for too long as you don’t want to attract nasty insects and bugs.

Flora and Fauna

A bunch of flowers on the sink or on a bathroom shelf will give off a heady natural perfume. Think about filling your bathroom with strong-scented flowers such as lilies, roses, jasmine, freesia, honeysuckle and lavender.

Plants are also a good choice for your bathroom. Known for their ability to purify the air, they are a perfect addition to a bathroom for a fresh small and also some gorgeous green foliage.

Eucalyptus in Your Bathroom

Not only does a stem or two of eucalyptus look stylish when put in a glass bud vase, if you hang it in the shower the steam will activate some useful health benefits.

Some of the benefits include stress reduction, pain relief, lowered blood pressure and help for respiratory conditions. And as we all know, inhaling eucalyptus is great for helping with stuffiness from the common cold.

Petals in the Bath

Not only do petals in the bathtub look wonderfully dreamy and romantic, they are the ultimate in creating your own heady spa scent.

Petals in your bath also feel soothing to the skin. Rose petals contain rose oils which mix into your bathwater. Creating rosewater, this is soothing and comforting to the skin. So just sit back and soak!

Pot Pourri for a Pleasant Spa Scent

Pot pourri has been returning in popularity as a lovely natural way of injecting a floral, fruity and spicy scent to any room. In the bathroom it can help draw out any musty or moldy odors.

It is also good for the wallet as you can make your own pot pourri both simply and cheaply. It also looks colorful on any shelf.

Handmade Soap for a Spa Scent

Gift shops are usually awash with beautifully wrapped handmade soaps, you can also find them in good department stores.

Not only do they look beautiful, especially those pressed with real petals, or made into a pretty parcel with string but they will give out a heady floral scent, as good as any spa.

Spa Candles in the Bathroom

Scented candles, especially those from more expensive brands will give out a rich scent when unlit and will look stylish on the side of the bath or on a shelf.

But when lit – what a treat! You can light tea lights in the side of the bath or a coveted scented candle jar and relax and unwind in a relaxing spa bath, all in your own bathroom!

Simple Hacks for a Spa Scented Bathroom

Open the Window

Sometimes when it’s cold we don’t think about opening the window. But it’s key if you don’t have an extractor fan to release steam from the bathroom to prevent mold and damp from forming.

Not only that, but the room will smell clean and fresh, taking in scents of pine trees outside, or in the summer, floral scents from the garden.

White Vinegar to Reduce Odor

White vinegar is great for the bathroom because it removes odor and also disinfects toilets and drains.

You can use it to clean your bathroom for sparkling results. Also you can pour a little in your toilet bowl each night to wake up with a fresh bathroom in the morning.

Cotton Balls in the Bathroom for a Spa Scent

Cotton balls can be used as an affordable DIY diffuser pad to get rid of unpleasant odors. For a decorative solution, put some cotton balls in a glass bowl and add some essential oil. Lemon or lavender are great choices.

You can also put a few drops on a few cotton balls and hide them in nooks and crannies in your bathroom, such as behind the toilet, under the sink, or even inside the toilet paper roll. You will have a consistently scented bathroom and no one will know how easy it is!

Activated Charcoal

Activated charcoal can work as a brilliant bathroom deodorizer. It can also reduce mold in your space, as well as removing toxins.

You can get purifier bags made from bamboo with the activated charcoal. Then place them next to the sink or behind the toilet for a freshness in your bathroom.

Toothpaste in the Toilet!

This is a great way to take the bad smell out of your toilet. All you have to do is take a tube of toothpaste, then poke a few small holes in it. Open the back of the toilet and put the tube in your toilet tank.

Each time you flush your toilet a little bit of toothpaste will be released and clean your toilet bowl. This means that your toilet doesn’t get dirty. And you will have a minty fresh spa smell in your bathroom.

In Summary

There are lots and lots of great solutions to make your bathroom smell as fresh and expensive as any spa.

From fruit and floral options, to using oils and reeds to disperse a gorgeous scent in your bathroom, there are also some handy hacks you might not have thought about including toothpaste in your toilet!

Much better than synthetic remedies, these natural scents can also be inexpensive and handmade. So you can spend time relaxing in your beautifully aromatic bathroom.
