Why Should You Remodel Your Kitchen?

By: Advaita Raut |

When a kitchen is old and worn it’s a good time to remodel. But it’s worth thinking about what you most want to get from your kitchen do-over.

Perhaps it’s about adding space or making the best use of the space you have. You’ll want to think about your cabinets and countertops, and most of all the design and aesthetic of your remodeled kitchen.

There could also be one or two other considerations you’ve not thought about. So collect some ideas for the best remodeling of your kitchen in your beautiful home.

To Increase Functionality

Perhaps you’ve moved into a home that has mold or where the kitchen is barely usable. Or you have a layout that just doesn’t work for modern family life.

If you’re starting from scratch you’ll want to think about the functionality of the kitchen and the way it will best work for your home.

You may have heard of the kitchen triangle layout. This is where your fridge, your stove and your sink are at each point of a triangle. This is supposed to be the most efficient way of preparing and cooking in the kitchen, with these fixtures at these points.

But think also about how you like to work in your kitchen and therefore position your appliances and sink where you best need them to be.

To Increase Your Kitchen Space

To bring in some glorious light to your kitchen you might build onto your home and extend out into the backyard. Architecturally designed windows will add panache.

This is a perfect way of adding your own style to your home as well as adding value. A well-built extension will increase the profitability of your home.

But more than that it will give you a useful, contemporary space you have designed with you and the other people in your life in mind. You can add a useful dining area or increase the area of your existing kitchen.

To Improve Your Kitchen Storage

If you are always opening cabinets and the contents spill out or you struggle to find the things you need when you feel like cooking a big, fancy meal, you need to increase your storage space.

As well as having a good clearout and leaving only the equipment and items you really need, you should think about the way you store them.

If you have made as much of the interior cabinet space as you can but you still have things left over with nowhere to go, then consider building additional cabinets.

Alongside your existing cabinets, a large floor to ceiling cabinet going across one of your kitchen walls can take lots of your kitchen items. If you want to display your good taste, choose glass doors and use lighting under the shelves.

To Give You Space to Eat

Maybe you have a smaller home and you don’t have a dedicated dining room. Or perhaps you now work from home and the dining room has become a home office. You’ll need to remodel your kitchen to add space to eat.

If you love an island then this is the perfect place in your kitchen to add somewhere to dine. Making sure the island is recessed or open underneath, you can add stools or tall chairs to sit and eat. And of course you can as well use the surface for cooking and preparing food.

For a Zero Waste Kitchen

If you worry about the planet and the amount you consume, then how you cook and use your kitchen can have an impact.

A zero waste kitchen is when you buy your food with as little packaging as possible. So think about buying meat from your butcher or farm store wrapped in paper rather than in rigid plastic packaging. Or getting dried goods from a scoop store.

And making more of your own meals from pulses and fresh vegetables than plastic packaged ultra processed food will help. You will need less space to store food, have a smaller trash can in your kitchen, and what’s more it’s great for your health!

Create a Sustainable Kitchen

The materials you choose in your kitchen when remodeling can be sustainable and good for the environment if you choose wisely.

Some examples are buying energy efficient appliances, installing alternative energy sources like solar power or even getting a faucet with a filter so you don’t need to buy bottled water.

And when it comes to selecting kitchen cabinets, you can check where they are made and whether they have plastic or lots of paint and glue in the design.

You might want to look for bespoke sustainable kitchen designers, or even try to install your own eco-friendly kitchen.

To Get the Design You Want

This is the fun part of remodeling your kitchen. You can pick the design you want. You may have coveted a particular design for a while and now is your chance to introduce this into your new kitchen.

You might have to compromise, for example, by using the carcass of the old cabinets or finding that you can’t knock down the wall you wanted to. But you can pick colors, tiles and flooring of the kind you most desire.

A Modern Classic Kitchen

In a dark, dingy kitchen that’s been driving you crazy, when you remodel you can add some light with classic white walls. A white subway tile will work for the backsplash.

And both modern and classic is a shaker style dark color kitchen. Matched with a wood countertop, this exudes expense and good taste. Enjoy adding ornaments and handy but beautiful kitchen equipment and display on an open shelf.

Add Some Romance

For a romantic look in your kitchen, the go-to is pink and floral, and what better than this timeless combination? But did you know you can create a custom backsplash that is both easy to install and won’t break the bank?

To go with your on-trend Barbie pink kitchen cabinets, you can paper the wall above in purpose made wallpaper with a horizontal design and that wipes clean. Ingenious!

Inject a Little Character

You’ve been itching to do it since you moved in when you never liked the existing kitchen. And now you can go to town adding character to your remodeled kitchen.

You can pick the colors and tiles you love and add carefully chosen prints and artwork to the wall. And how about a marble countertop or perhaps a wood cabinet? When you’re calling the shots, the choice is all yours!

In Closing

When you’re thinking about remodeling your kitchen you’ll take into budget and almost certainly design. The other considerations are how you want to best use the space, the layout of your kitchen and the materials you choose.

If you want a more sustainable space then as well as the materials you can think about energy saving appliances and ways to buy less packaging with your food.

And if you have a small kitchen you may be able to increase the size to have the dream kitchen you’ve always wanted.
