Backyard Airbnb Ideas

By: Advaita Raut |

It’s easy to get focused on the interior of your Airbnb rental but your outdoor space can be just important. If your guests are staying at a hot time of year, this could be where they spend much of the time.

And if you have a large window looking out on the backyard it’s important to make that view count, whatever the time of year.

So think about ways you could improve your outdoor space and you can even make some big changes on a small budget.

Garden Landscaping

A backyard overhaul doesn’t have to be about big excavations or adding a pool. It can be about using what you have, making the best of it and adding to it.

At a basic level if you have a lawn make sure it’s watered and if it’s looking patchy then add some grass seed. Make sure your grass is cut regularly and that the edges are tidy.

Then look at the shape of the garnered. Could you add interest with tall shrubs and plants? Is there a corner you could turn into a seating area?

And finally, this will add character and make a garden look mature, if you install a path. Perhaps one that curves. Using gravel to mark out edges and pathways will look like you’ve had a professional in. This will give you a true designer makeover.

Cozy by the Firepit

Either for backyards that will get used a lot in the summer to keep people warm in the evening or for cooler temperatures to let guests make the most of the fresh air, you can add a firepit to your backyard.

It’s free standing so there’s no installation and there will be something for every budget. A metal firepit just needs a few chunks of wood and a flame to give you the heat of a campfire without the hassle.

Give your guests some chairs and blankets and this will make the backyard an ideal spot to while away the evening hours.

Make the Most of a Porch

If you have a porch on your Airbnb property then you do not want to waste the chance to maximize this space.

Make sure the wood is freshly painted or treated and put some seating out on the deck. Add a table for drinks and decorate the area with potted plants or with planted flowers. If you have the space then a porch swing seat will go down a treat.

Garden Retreat

For a larger backyard, you could add an outdoor building such as a shed or summer house and build your very own garden retreat.

This is a great spot to escape for some peace and quiet away from the throng. Add some comfy seating and layer with pretty cushions, textiles and blankets for a romantic outdoor ambience.

Make a Feature of a Bench

You can make a feature of an outdoor bench swing by adding some climbing flowers. If you are greenfingered then you could grow some pretty blooms. But otherwise you can wind around artificial flowers.

This will give you an Instagrammable garden feature. The more photo opportunities you provide, the more guests will share on social media. And you might just find you get more bookings as a result.

Hang Around in a Hammock

In a secluded edge of the backyard, even within a small outdoor space, you could create a little oasis with lots of lush green planting in varied heights.

Tie a hammock between two trees or install a free standing one. Then dress with cushions or blankets to make the hammock the perfect place to lie out and relax.

Hot Tub Time Machine

Hot tubs are super popular with many people who use them regularly in their own backyards. For your guests they might be a novelty that will tip them onto the 5-star review.

Create a special area for your hot tub with seating around and easy access via steps or a platform. This can be a truly social space.

Make sure you maintain your hot tub by cleaning it between guests and ensuring temperatures and any chemicals are at the right levels. Done right, this addition could easily increase your revenue.

Al Fresco Dining

Your guests will love the chance to sit and eat outside especially in warmer weather so out a dining table and chairs under a gazebo or partially covered area.

You might like to make the most of the area by decorating a wall with a mural. And when taking your Airbnb listing photos, set the table to give an idea of how their experience can be.

Pepper your Yard with Pots

Fill ceramic pots in different shapes and sizes with gorgeous plants and group them together. This is a great idea for any garden but particularly a small garden.

If you have a small courtyard garden or a patio, this will make the area pretty and other than watering an occasional deadheading is a low maintenance way to grow outdoor plants.

Say it with Flowers

If you love to garden then you may like to try your hand at planting a cottage garden. An abundance of flowers will look amazing as well as attracting wildlife like butterflies and bees to your outdoor space.

Dig a border at the edge of a lawn and plant flowers in a bed of soil. If you add to it with flowers that are in bloom across the season you will have constant flowering and beautiful colors.

Lights at Night

If you have a lovely seating area that is beautifully styled it makes sense to use it at night also. So you’ll want to add strings of lights. You can fix festoon lighting or string lighting for a pretty romantic glow.

Other light sources for the evening include solar lights you can put in the ground and lanterns and candles arranged in groups.

Fun and Games in your Airbnb Backyard

It is a great idea to leave some games for the backyard for your Airbnb guests. At the very least you can leave a ball but check out the myriad of outdoor games available. From croquet sets to giant Jenga, there are fun games made from wood you could try.

And for children, how about a trampoline? And if you have the space, you could fill a paddling pool, though you will need to make sure your guests ensure their safety around these items.

Crazy Golf

This will go down really well with those who like to have fun in the backyard, a game of mini golf. If you have an area you can use, you can build a mini golf course.

As well as being fun for guests to play, it can be fun to build your own backyard mini golf course. Just use your imagination as to where you can have slopes and maybe build a bridge or a tunnel.

Outdoor games will also look great on social media so encourage your guests to tag you into their pictures.

In Closing

Your Airbnb backyard can be just as important as the interior when it comes to getting a 5-star review. So make sure you have done all you can to get the most out of the space.

From landscaping and adding planting, to creating little nooks to escape the noise, there are lots of ideas to choose from when it comes to maximizing your rental backyard.

And use the chance to add some novelties which are popular on social media – a summer house, some outdoor toys or a pretty place to sit. Simply making the best of the area you have can reap dividends on your Airbnb property.
