Farmhouse Ceiling Ideas

By: Advaita Raut |

Hot on the heels of the cottage core look is the more relaxed farmhouse home decor design. Easy to recreate in any home, this rustic sophistication gives a warmth and charm to any room.

Ceilings often get neglected in our homes. We’ll think about our wallpaper or paint choice for the wall but will then simply paint the ceiling white and leave it.

If you’re going with the farmhouse aesthetic you’ll need to consider decorating the whole room including the ceiling. You can choose from a number of updates to increase the rustic appeal in your home. Some might be easier than you think!

Farmhouse Kitchen Wood Ceiling

Your kitchen may be a cute, white farmhouse style with traditional features and excellent styling. But what about the ceiling?

Not to be ignored, and to add some warmth and coziness, you can add wood to your ceiling. It doesn’t have to be the reserve of the floor.

It may look tricky to address but adding timber to your own ceiling needn’t be too hard. But if your DIY skills are a little limited or you don’t have the time and money for an extensive project, you could try a stick-on wood effect ceiling decal.

Beautiful Rustic Bedroom Ceiling

You may at first think that feature ceilings are for the downstairs in your home, your living room or your kitchen. But you could try taking it upstairs.

A polished wood ceiling in a bedroom can be further enhanced by a gorgeous glass chandelier light fixture. The wood has the effect of closing the room in and lowering the ceiling. Which when you want coziness is a perfect element to install.

Elegant Black Farmhouse Ceiling

For something a little different and a little daring, as well as being super on-trend, you could try painting your wood ceiling black.

Black is still fashionable in interiors and painted over a high ceiling this will add definition and grace to the room as well as lending to the all important farmhouse aesthetic. To get this to look truly great you’ll need a smooth surface, so preparation and plenty of sanding is key!

For an outhouse or lean-to, the wood paneled look works brilliantly for the farmhouse style. You can add shiplap to the wall and give it a coat of clear varnish for an old-fashioned, natural finish.

As for dressing the space, floral prints work well if you’re into grandma chic. And if you are lacking light, you could add a window in the ceiling to give an abundance of light to your farmhouse room.

Beautiful Beams

For those who are extending their homes, or even starting to build from scratch, then give due consideration to making beams a feature in your home. Natural oak beams have a wonderful rustic effect and homely warmth.

If you can’t start your construction from scratch then take inspiration from the real thing, and consider adding decorative wood beams to your ceiling. This is the pinnacle of the farmhouse look.

Simple Beam Farmhouse Ceiling

If you have a sloping ceiling and are worried about the expense of adding several beams, why not install one at the apex.

In a crisp, white farmhouse living room, this wood beam will act as an accent and draw the eye upward, making the space feel larger.

You can fit modern inset lights in the ceiling as a part of the farmhouse look, as the scheme blends the best of traditional and modern. And with a beam as a feature, an uncomplicated white background will set it off.

Shiplap Farmhouse Ceiling

What can work well with exposed wood beams, to add a sense of warmth and coziness, is a shiplap ceiling. For the modern farmhouse look, keep this painted white and use minimal decoration.

The kind of light fixtures that will enhance this design are very simple, for example a black metal fixture with a large, bare lightbulb. Very trendy and understated.

To create interest in your ceiling and to stay in keeping with the farmhouse style, you’ll need to select appropriate lighting.

Light fixtures that look like lanterns are a good bet for your farmhouse rooms. Think of rustic, old style lamp fittings with candle light bulbs. This will work as an old look in a newer style house with smooth white ceilings as well as in older properties.

Metal Pendant Chandelier

Another kind of fixture to hang from your apex beam is an iron simple chandelier in a medieval or country rustic style. Think heavy, circular and suspended by heavy metal chains.

Again, best fitted with candle shaped light bulbs, this will add impact and drama to a room. And it will add that raw, rural simplicity you’re looking for.

Farmhouse Bedroom Chandelier

If you have gone for shiplap and beams on your ceiling, or you already have a rustic ceiling in your bedroom and you’re unsure which lighting to put up, a sparkly chandelier may be the solution.

As long as the rest of the room is in a neutral color palette with natural wood and white soft furnishings, you can add some pizzazz with an ornate chandelier. The root of the farmhouse look, mixing a very rustic look with a hint of glamor or modern will show you know your farmhouse onions.

Modern Farmhouse Twist

In a rustic kitchen or dining room, with a beautiful natural shiplap ceiling with white beams, you can select the best of designer lighting.

If you’ve gone pale and interesting on your decor then a signature light fixture will set off the look. Try sculptural lights which have a playful or modern twist on the traditional. You may even like to try making your own unique farmhouse pendant light.

Farmhouse Rope Lighting Fixture

There’s nothing that says country more than some rope and metal! You can put this all together and have the most original farmhouse light fitting to adorn your ceiling.

This look will work brilliantly on a plain white ceiling if you want to enhance it with the farmhouse aesthetic. This is also something you might be able to make yourself, so maybe you would like to create your own light pendant made with rope.

In Summary

Farmhouse ceilings have a lot of scope, no matter your property. For a feeling of coziness, wood ceilings will enclose the space and have the visual effect of lowering the ceiling. This can work well for a bedroom or a snug where you want to feel super comfy.

A white ceiling either painted or in white shiplap is good for increasing the feeling of space. Beams will add character, even decorative ones you install post-construction.

And lighting can be simple, in black metal or in lantern styles. Though you can also use a modern chandelier to offset the traditional look if you have a farmhouse ceiling. How you decorate your ceiling will complete your desired farmhouse aesthetic.
